TUVA’s coaches are incredibly experienced leaders, dedicated to volleyball and athlete development, and are committed and prepared to advance the development of elite volleyball in North Carolina.

Bill Ferguson

Master Trainer / 16 Teal Head Coach

Bill Ferguson is one of the most accomplished college and club coaches in America. Bill has been a head coach for both men’s and women’s power five volleyball programs and spent over 25 years as a club owner, director, and coach. Currently, Bill is the men’s head volleyball coach at Carolina University in Winston-Salem. He has an immense amount of successful experience coaching collegiate men’s volleyball after serving as the head men’s coach at the University of Southern California for nine seasons. Prior to CU, Bill was the head women’s coach at Wake Forest University for three seasons. He also has an extensive club volleyball background. In 1993 he resurrected his father’s old powerhouse club, Palisades Boys Volleyball. He later directed volleyball at The Los Angeles Athletic Club and he was a co-founder of the Southern California Volleyball Club. As a club coach and director, Bill has coached boy’s, girl’s, and men’s and women’s open club teams to 13 USA Volleyball gold medals. Bill spent the last four years coaching at Carolina Union Volleyball Club in Charlotte. Bill also served on the coaching staff for the USA Volleyball National teams seven times. Currently, he trains players privately; training professional players in their off-seasons. Bill also helps prepare collegiate graduates for their professional teams and trains current collegiate players during their off-seasons. He also works with current club players and coaches the 16s Girls Teams.

Tiffany Brooks graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne University in 2017 where she played volleyball. Tiffany began playing middle blocker, but then became an outside hitter and DS in college. Along with her insurance career, she has developed a coaching path. In 2018, she started coaching for Carolina Select Volleyball, where she was a head coach for 4 years. She also was the head coach for University Christian High School for 2 years.

Tabatha joins the TUVA staff bringing nine seasons of club coaching experience. She is entering her second season as the head JV coach and assistant Varsity coach at Davie County High School. Before that she served eight seasons as the head JV coach and Varsity Assistant coach at Mt. Tabor High School with Robyn Wesselman. Tabatha played volleyball for 11 years: at Mt. Tabor HS (2005-2009, 2008 State Runner Ups), with the Players Edge club (2005-2009), and with North Carolina State University’s club team (2009-2013). Tabatha is now working full time for her family’s business in Winston Salem.

Caleb Gilley has over 15 years of volleyball coaching experience at the high school, collegiate, and club levels. Currently, Gilley is entering his 2nd stint as the head coach at East Surry HS where he served as the head coach from 2011-2019, leading them to 7 conference championships and 2 state championship appearances, and a 210-53 overall record during his time. He was named the Coach of the Year on 6 different occasions, including the 2019 NC AVCA Coach of the Year. The past 2 seasons, he coached at Surry Community College where he led his teams to the NJCAA Region 10 Western Championship in back to back seasons. Under Gilley his teams went 48-7 the last 2 seasons and he had 2 players named All-Americans. As a club coach, he has coached 14s thru 17s, and also helped lead recruiting efforts where over 30 athletes over the last 3 seasons committed to play at the next level. Gilley currently works in higher education at Surry Community College. He has a degree in Workforce Leadership & Development from Appalachian State and is currently pursuing his MBA from UNC Pembroke.

Rylee Wilson graduated from Winston Salem State University, where she was a captain and 3x All-Conference setter. Rylee received several awards and accolades for her athletic and academic performance during her time at WSSU. She is a dedicated coach who strives to find effective and efficient ways to enhance athletic performance for long-term results. She has been in the volleyball community for 6 years working with high-performance clubs in Winston-Salem and high school programs in Greensboro.

Nya Steele

Nya Steele

Nya Steele is a current member of the Trinidad and Tobago Women’s National volleyball team and has been a part of the team since 2016. She has played in a number of international tournaments including the FIVB World Grand Prix in Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago, FIVB/CAZOVA Caribbean Volleyball Championships in Jamaica, and Norceca Final Four Pan American Games Qualification Tournament in Puerto Rico. In 2017 she was named Trinidad and Tobago’s youth player of the year. Nya is also an alumna of Mercer university where she earned multiple “Setter of the Week” awards. Nya not only has on court experience as a player, but also has coaching experience via private lessons and high school volleyball. During the 2020-2021high school season Nya served as the assistant coach for Bishop McGuinness and helped the team reach the regional finals for the first time in school history. Nya takes pride in giving back to this generation of volleyball athletes and is looking forward to the upcoming season at Triad United.

Cali Watson is originally from Wilmington, NC. Cali enjoys the beach, camping, and crafting. After 5 years of playing high school and club volleyball as an OH/MB, Cali began her collegiate career at the University of Mount Olive and then transferred to Western Texas College. This will be her 5th season coaching club volleyball.

Morgan Hester is a Catawba College Volleyball alumna who is currently ranked 8th in total career assists and 8th in total assists in a match at Catawba. She was captain of the team in her Junior and Senior seasons and was awarded the Dean N. Grove Award, which recognizes student-athletes who demonstrated excellent leadership in mathematics, science, and sport. She is an assistant coach for the Catawba College Volleyball team and has been coaching club volleyball in North Carolina for 7 years.

Morgan Flores is an alumna of Appalachian State University where she was a defensive specialist/libero for the volleyball team for 3 years. She spent one year on the App State coaching staff as a student assistant coach. In May 2023, she graduated with a degree in Public Health and is currently in a Dental Hygiene program. Morgan has also staffed volleyball camps and clinics for 4 years. She is entering her second year as a club coach and looks forward to helping players improve their performance and increase their volleyball IQ.

Valeria has 9 years of experience as a player and coach. Most recently, Valeria has coached at Champion Volleyball Club for three years. Starting her collegiate career at Salem College as an OH/DS, she is currently team captain, and plays as outside hitter at Salem College, where she continues to push herself and grow as an athlete. She curently is a team leader in various statistical categories.

 

Off the court, she works as a Starbucks barista and a Marketing intern, while pursuing a major in business administration and studio art, with a minor in entrepreneurship at Salem College. She is very excited to work with Triad United and share her passion for volleyball with others.

Megan Lebbie has 8 years of playing experience as a Middle Hitter/ Blocker and 4 years of club coaching experience. She played at a highly competitive level throughout high school including earning a Midwest Championship and Class A state runner-up title. She is excited to help athletes develop their volleyball IQ, physical skills, and mental toughness. Megan recently moved to NC from Michigan where she attended Michigan State University majoring in Nursing with a minor in health promotion. Off the court, she is a registered nurse and newborn nanny.

My name is Seja. I have been a Nurses Assistant for 4 years. While helping the geriatric community, I studied and played volleyball as a middle and right-side hitter at Guilford Technical Community College for 2 years. I am currently the JV volleyball coach at Glenn High School. I have a passion for inspiring others to become the best version of themselves. At Triad United I plan to help identify the power inside and bring excitement. I am very excited about this upcoming season!

Maya Gray has been playing volleyball since she was 9 years old. She is from Clayton, North Carolina, and played at NC Volleyball Academy for most of her career. She currently attends Carolina University and is graduating this year with her Bachelor’s in Public Health while playing volleyball. She is very excited to start her first coaching season with TUVA and share her knowledge!

Ashton Gregory graduated from Starmount High School where she helped lead the volleyball team to a 2A state championship. She then played at Furman University for 2 years where she was named to the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team and named SoCon Freshman of the Year. As a sophomore, she was on the Duke Invitational All-Tournament Team as well as The Carolina Challenge All-Tournament Team and was named SoCon Player of the Week 4 times as well as SoCon Player of the Year. In 2014, Ashton was named to the East Coast All-Region Team and tabbed as All-American Honorable Mention. She transferred to Appalachian State University in 2015 and was on the Sun Belt All-Conference team and was a Southeast All-Region Honorable Mention. After graduating from App State she returned to Starmount High School and coached from 2017-2023 where she served as head coach for the varsity team from 2020-23. She also coached club volleyball at Yadkin Valley Volleyball Club from 2017-2019 & Twin City Volleyball Academy from 2019-2023.

Katie Gough began her love of volleyball at age 11 when she attended her first volleyball camp. After receiving All-Regional Player her senior year of high school, Katie was recruited to play volleyball for Surry Community College. During her freshman year, she was named regular season MVP. She was again recognized as an All-Regional Player and was ranked by the NJCAA as #5 in the nation for assists. She has served as a head volleyball coach for two seasons with the Arcadia Elite recreation team and one season with Twin City Volleyball Academy as an assistant coach.

Mackenzie Fulk is from East Bend, North Carolina. She played for 2 years at Union University (TN) and later transferred to finish at Catawba College. Mackenzie graduated in 2022 with a degree in Exercise Science-Sports Medicine and is currently a full-time student working towards a Master’s degree in Exercise Physiology with a concentration in Biomechanics. She is excited to start coaching and give back to the sport she loves so much.

Maddie Thompson has 16 years of experience as a player and coach. Maddie previously coached at Piedmont Volleyball Club and is currently the assistant volleyball coach at East Forsyth High School. Maddie was a 4-year Libero at Elon University from 2015-2019. In high school, she played for Sports Performance Volleyball Club and won two AAU national championships, and came in 2nd place at AAU’s one year. She was also all-state in Illinois for the 2014 volleyball season.

Justin Burgess

Justin is entering his 15th year coaching club volleyball. Justin’s coaching credentials include stints as head coach for several clubs including North Carolina Volleyball Academy, Set Point Volleyball Club, High Rock Volleyball Club, and Twin City Volleyball Academy.

 

Justin coached at Davidson Community College from 2011-2016, earning recognition as Region X Conference Coach of the Year and District H Coach of the Year in 2014. He led Davidson to an undefeated conference record and an Elite 8 appearance in the NJCAA National Championship in Rochester, Minnesota. While at Davidson he coached three NJCAA All-Americans, three Conference Player of the Year recipients, and 11 Region X All-Conference players.

 

Justin helped start the boys program at TCVA in 2017. In 6 short years, he developed TCVA into the largest boys club in the Carolinas and one of the most successful. His boys teams have won numerous tournaments and was the 2nd club ever in the state of NC to earn an OPEN bid to USA Nationals (18 BROS – 23′).

 

Burgess is also a very accomplished open level outdoor and indoor player winning numerous tournaments along with three top ten performances at the USA Volleyball Open National Championships in Phoenix, Arizona, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Dallas, Texas.

Patrick Shugart

Patrick earned a Master’s Degree in Athletic Administration with a specialization in Coaching from James Madison University, where he was a starting outside hitter and captain of the men’s volleyball club team that won two conference championships, two East Coast championships, and had two top-ten finishes at Nationals. In his last year at JMU, he was All-Conference and voted the conference’s Best Passer. After moving to NC in 2009, he was the MVP of the Carolina Region Championships, playing as a hitter and setter in a 6-2 offense.

 

He started coaching recreation league volleyball while in high school, then was head coach of the Valley Juniors 14s team in Harrisonburg, VA his senior year in college. After graduating, Patrick was head coach of the boy’s varsity team at James River High School in Midlothian, VA for one year before moving on to be the lead assistant coach at Bridgewater College for five years, compiling a record of 136-25. While at Bridgewater, he coached two ODAC Player of the Years, one ODAC Rookie of the Year, and seven First Team All-Conference players.

 

Patrick was instrumental in forming the 14U group at TCVA, in 3 short seasons he developed the 14U program into one of the top programs on the East Coast.

 

Patrick lives in Clemmons with his wife, Chrissi, and their three children.

Drew Sims

A native of Southern California, Drew started playing volleyball as a freshman in high school where he competed at the top club level, finishing no worse than 10th place in the nation in his four years of playing club volleyball at SMBC. Drew later accepted a volleyball scholarship to Lees-McRae College where he started at Outside and Middle in his first season and as an Opposite his second and final season at Lees-McRae. He graduated in 2020 with a B.S. History and moved to East Bend, North Carolina later that year. After a gap year, Drew received another volleyball scholarship to attend Campbellsville University in Kentucky. Drew started at Opposite and Middle in his final season of collegiate play. He graduated with a Masters degree in Sport Management in 2022 where he became the first Graduate student in the program to achieve a perfect 4.0 GPA. Today, Drew lives with his wife, Emily, and he is the Athletic Program Director for the Davie County Recreation and Parks Department.

A native of Winston-Salem, Sunny played club volleyball locally for Triad JOVBC and also for West Coast VBC in California. In college, she played volleyball for NC State and later played basketball for Wake Forest. Sunny began her volleyball coaching career as a Graduate Assistant for Wake Forest and also with Triad JOVBC which later became Set Point. She has coached both high school and middle school volleyball locally for over 25 years. A fun fact about Sunny is that she is in her high school’s Hall of Fame for both volleyball and basketball. Sunny met her husband, Joel, playing volleyball and they have three kids John, Eliza, and Nicholas.

AJ graduated from Princeton University in 2021 where he was a four-year member of the varsity men’s team and senior captain. While at Princeton, the team won the 2019 EIVA championship and returned to the NCAA tournament for the first time in 20 years in program history. After graduation, AJ began coaching for Princeton Volleyball Club in New Jersey. Most recently, he was the head coach for the PVC 16-1s girls team which medaled in several open tournaments in Boston, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania in 2023. He also led position clinics, in-season skills training, private lessons, and recruiting guidance for the club. AJ recently moved to Winston-Salem for graduate school and is excited to continue training and teaching the sport he loves in the Triad.

Kaylee is from Fayetteville, NC, and played for Sandhills Volleyball Club. She began attending Carolina University in the Fall of 2019. In 2019 and 2022, Kaylee and the Carolina Bruins won the NCCAA Volleyball Regional Championships. Kaylee graduated from Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. While attending Carolina University, she excelled in the classroom, graduating cum laude, and has had several recognitions on the Dean’s List and Student-Athlete awards. She is currently still playing volleyball for the Carolina Bruins and is in her fifth year now pursuing a Master’s degree in counseling. Kaylee has been coaching club volleyball for a little while now. She is excited to continue her journey in coaching with Triad United Volleyball Academy. She wants to continue to enhance the mindset of young adult athletes and help them excel on and off the court.

Kamra is from Atlanta, GA, and played for Atlanta Extreme Volleyball Club where she also coached a 17U AAU Boys Team. She began attending Carolina University in the Fall of 2020. She currently plays volleyball for the Carolina Bruins and is in her third year. While playing volleyball there, she is a Criminal Justice major. She will graduate from Carolina University in the Fall of 2024.

Sulema is from Advance, NC, and grew up playing club volleyball for Yadkin Valley Volleyball Club and Foothills Frenzy Volleyball Club. She earned all-conference honors as a senior at RJ Reynolds High School and was a three-year volleyball letter winner. She served as team captain on both her club and high school teams. She was the recipient of the Coach’s’ Award as a senior. After high school, she played at Guilford College as an outside hitter and defensive specialist. While playing at Guilford College, she was ranked second in digs and fourth in service aces. Following college, she played competitively for USAV, co-ed leagues, and grass tournaments throughout the southeast and Colorado.

 

She coached club volleyball in the off-season during her collegiate career, and she coached at The Denver Waldorf School while living in Colorado. She returned to coaching in the fall of 2022 for TCVA as the head coach for the 14U Steele Team. Off the court, Sulema works as a Licensed Clinician with youth, adolescents, and young adults aged six to twenty-one. Coaching has allowed her to combine her passions of volleyball, mental health, and creating a positive outlet for young athletes. She is excited to join the TUVA coaching staff!

David began playing volleyball as an adult after graduating from Wake Forest University. Starting in city Co-ed leagues and then progressing into playing competitively in the USAV NC Region USAV. For almost 20 years, David competed regionally and nationally in both indoor and outdoor volleyball tournaments, earning many championships along with All-Region awards as a Middle-Blocker. David has coached for the past couple of years in the 14U program for TUVA and has 2 sons who are actively playing in the program, Dylan and Logan.

Lauren Gillon graduated from Appalachian State University where she played club volleyball and earned a degree in Exercise Science. She is currently a science teacher at her alma mater, West Forsyth High School, and entering her 13th year as a teacher and Head Volleyball Coach. While there, she has coached several teams to conference championships, made many state playoff appearances, and has been elected conference coach of the year several times by her peers. In the spring of 2023, with the assistance of coach Patrick Shugart, started the first-ever indoor men’s volleyball team at West Forsyth High School. They had an outstanding inaugural season, with their only loss being to Marvin Ridge in the State Championship. Prior to coaching at Triad United, Lauren coached for 6 years at Twin City Volleyball Academy and 4 years at Set Point Volleyball Club in Winston-Salem. During her time at TCVA and Set Point, she coached ages 15-18 at both the National & Regional levels.

Olivia Holder has coached travel volleyball as an assistant coach for 2 seasons. Prior to coaching, she played club and high school volleyball in the Winston-Salem area for 5 years before continuing her athletic career at Lees-McRae College. At LMC, she finished top 10 in the record books for attack percentage, total blocks, and blocks per set.
